fort mitchell army base

Fort Mitchell Army Base - Located just outside the back door of Fort Benning, Fort Mitchell is an unincorporated community in Russell County, Alabama. The area was originally a garrison fort intended for defense during the Creek War (1813-1814). It was also the base for one of the last campaigns of the War of 1812. This community is home to the Fort Mitchell Historic Site, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1990, and the Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, established in 1987 to intern all American veterans. .

The community is very family friendly and most military residents. Homes are mostly newer, offering modern styles and sizes to suit families of any size, and the area is also home to a large number of retirees. Despite the "fort" in the name, Fort Mitchell is not a gated community like Fort Benning.

Two popular neighborhoods are Patriot's Point and Riverside Estates, but they're not the only ones to choose from! As is the case with almost all the islands off the coast of Ireland, Spike Island in Cork Harbor may not have had a monastery in the 7th century. Which I think is true of every island everywhere, but we are talking about Ireland now.

The island, which effectively commanded the entire port of Cork, changed hands on several occasions over the centuries, until it became strategically important to the English crown in the 1770s.

The port of Kinsale, about 17 miles southwest of Cork (home to Fort Charles and Fort James), had been a Royal Navy supply base in southern Ireland since 1694, but only small ships could use the port, and the navy was built up. they are bigger.

Cork considers its harbor to be the second largest natural harbor by navigable area in the world, after Sydney in Australia. When we learn about the star-shaped forts, the beautiful harbors are generally the forts. The first defensive structure on Spike Island was a type of fortified tower, built in the early 16th century and probably used by smugglers.

Although historically Great Britain was rarely the favorite of the rest of the world, it was particularly quiet in the 1770s. The American colonies revolted in 1775, and France and Spain joined the American side in 1779. Great Britain needed a bigger and better naval base in southern Ireland, which would serve as an embarkation point for convoys to America.

Southern Ireland also needed new defenses, as the USS Ranger, an American warship commanded by John Paul Jones (1747-1792), sailed around the Irish Sea in April 1778, attacking British merchant ships. This, as expected, horrifies the members of the British hoidy-toidy class, and it is the hoidy-toids who hold the strings of Great Britain.

Spike Island was then owned by a man named Nicholas Fitton, who leased part of the island to the British government and continued to live there when the Spike Island Battery was built in 1779. This battery was a temporary structure, armed with eighteen 24-pounder guns that before it was used at nearby Fort Cove, a square fort built along the northern shore of Cork Harbor in 1743. With the end of the American War of Independence (1777-). 1783) came as a joyful realization that there would be no more armed conflict, so the Spike Island Battery was dismantled.

Colonel Charles Vallancey (1731-1812) was in charge of the fortifications of Cork Harbor during the American Troubles. He convinced the authorities that a permanent fortress on Spike Island would be the smartest action, which is hard to disagree with today, as a result of the perfect example of the star fortress.

The Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland at the time was John Fane, 10th Earl of Westmorland (1759-1841), Westmorland is an earldom in the north-west of England. I have seen Fort Westmoreland also spelled "Westmorland", which is confusing, but Britain both rules the waves and waives the rules, so they can write it however they like.

Work on Fort Westmoreland began in 1790. The house of Nicholas Fitton, who owned Spike Island when the government first arrived with building materials in the 1770s, was eventually demolished to make way for the new fort. The Earl visited Spike Island in 1790 to give the project its holy name. Which is a shame, because while "Fort Westmoreland" is a good name for a fort, "Spike Fort" would be even cooler.

The lordship of Ireland passed in 1794 to William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam (1748-1833). One of Earl William's first acts was, at any rate, to stop all work at Fort Westmoreland. That's better than renaming it "Fort Fitzwilliam" at least. Did Fitzwilliam die at Fort Westmoreland because of the fort's connection to his previous lieutenants? Earl William didn't respond to my text messages, so I don't know.

QF 12-pounder gun at Fort Westmoreland. The identification of this weapon came to us thanks to John Mulcahy, who served with the 23rd Infantry Brigade (FCA), an Irish Army unit responsible for several forts in Cork Harbor in the 1980s. Thanks for your attention to gun identification, John!

The first iteration of Fort Westmoreland was completed in 1802. Although it was impressively armed with 29 24-pounder guns, two 12-pounder guns, twelve 6-pounder guns, a pair of 6-inch guns, two 5.5-inch howitzers, and thirteen mortars 5.5 inches by 13 inches, this first Westmoreland fortress somehow did not give the English the feeling that Cork was safe.

In 1798, the French approached 15,000 men in Bantry Bay, southwest of Ireland. This invasion would support the United Irish rebellion, which lasted from May to September of that year. Most of the French fleet arrived as planned in Bantry Bay in December 1798, but the delay of the French admiral Fraternité sent everyone into a frenzy and the French decided to return home without an invasion.

Despite the fact that this was a wacky non-invasion, this episode was disturbing, and shortly after the first Fort Westmoreland was completed, it was agreed that the "big fort" would be built on Spike Island. This
