Davey Crockett Weapon - One of the real rewards of writing a regular newspaper column is meeting some very interesting people. Case in point: About three weeks ago, in a column I wrote about a recent trip back in time as a nuclear weapons officer visiting a museum in Los Alamos, New Mexico, I mentioned Davy Crockett.

Frank Disney Loveland reinvented Davy Crockett's jeep-mounted weapon system. It appears that Jim Willard met a real person 57 years ago as Operations Officer of the Eighteenth Airborne Technical Inspection Group of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Division Inspection Units. A singer caught the attention of a Loveland man who was very familiar with Davy Crockett. It didn't look like Fess Parker or John Wayne, but it was familiar enough to have been built from bought and manufactured parts.

The last time I saw him, he was the operations officer of the technical inspection group of the 18th Corps, who was inspecting the units of the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne Divisions 57 years ago.

If there are no nuclear weapons, there is nothing. Therefore, we reviewed the operational and safety procedures of these airborne infantry units.

Of course, the only model similar to his nuclear warhead was surrounded by a formation charge that would trigger a fission explosion.

The Davy Crockett's birth as a potential low-powered infantry weapon occurred during the coldest period of the Cold War.

After World War II ended with the explosions of "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" over Japan, the United States continued its research into nuclear weapons. This study concluded that it is possible to make a nuclear warhead with a smaller size.

So in 1957, the Atomic Energy Commission announced that it had developed a small fission warhead that could be deployed by infantry.

The output of this device was equivalent to the explosion of 20 tons of TNT. It was a huge boom that was still fraught with radiation. This is the Davy Crockett system punch.

Tactical Nuclear Weapons Of The Cold War

This weapon (without the use of a nuclear warhead) was tested at a fort in Alaska and at the Yuma Test Site in Arizona.

The Davy Crockett system entered service with active duty units in May 1961. This is a few months before the Berlin Wall was built and only 16 months before the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The last units equipped with Davy Crockett were two infantry platoons of the 82nd Airborne Division in 1968. The M388 (US Army designation) was withdrawn from European service the year before.

Seeing the reality brought back many memories, including the time I (as a lieutenant) had to explain to a division commander (a 2-star general) about a re-inspection of one of my previous units. Check. They came second (thanks to them and me).

A resident of Loveland since 1967, Jim Willard retired from Hewlett-Packard after 33 years to focus on less trivial matters. An important takeaway for American soldiers and veterans who have seen Starship Troopers is that aside from the possibility that men and women will one day shower together, future infantry squads will be equipped with crew-served tactical nuclear weapons. They are carried.

Coincidentally, the military actually deployed such tactical nuclear weapons systems during the Cold War. The Davy Crockett was a recoilless rifle that fired a nuclear warhead of 0.01-0.02 kilotons (approximately 10-20 tons of TNT).

According to the Army Historical Foundation, the Army began deploying Davy Crockett weapons systems to infantry units in West Germany, Guam, Hawaii, Okinawa and South Korea in 1961. Davy Crockett was handled by three soldiers and rode in a jeep. The M28 "light" 120 mm recoilless gun had a range of 1.25 miles, and the M29 "heavy" 155 mm gun could fire nuclear missiles from a distance of 2.5 miles.

"The military has never officially said that Davy Crockett gave the crew a lethal dose of radiation, but it's clear that if the crew wasn't properly shielded, there's a good chance it could have happened," said senior historian Matthew Seelinger. Army Historical Foundation

But even if crews could protect themselves from radioactive fallout, the concept of an army fighting on a nuclear battlefield was inherently flawed if the US or the enemy used Davy Crockett-like tactical nuclear weapons in combat. Seelinger told Task & Purpose that it likely escalated into full-blown nuclear war.

"Every Army officer I worked with at the time, especially the field artillery officer, said that when the first nuclear bomb was fired, the conflict immediately escalated beyond anyone's control," Selinger said.

However, from 1957 to 1963, the Army's infantry and airborne divisions were organized into "pantomic" divisions for combat on nuclear battlefields.

The Davy Crockett was designed for use against advancing Soviet, Warsaw Pact, and North Korean forces, allowing a small force of American troops to destroy approximately 12 enemy tanks. White House adviser on chemical, biological, and radiological weapons from 1996 to 2002.

While the warhead produced a small nuclear explosion, the direct radiation emitted by the explosion had a greater lethal radius than the explosion itself. If the warhead detonated at a height of 75 to 85 meters, anyone within 400 meters of the explosion would likely be exposed to a lethal dose of radiation, said Casetta, a researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, a British security expert. "But lethal doses kill you for days or weeks," Kaszeta told Task & Purpose.

Although the Davy Crockett's range was only 2.5 miles, the weapon's firing was not suicide, Casetta said. The explosion itself was very small. Launching a nuclear warhead for aerial detonation would minimize the level of radioactive fallout, he said.

"It also takes time to happen," Kaszeta said. "It comes from the cooling of the mushroom cloud, and most of the fallout comes from the upper third of the mushroom cloud's stem and wide cap. The principle of employing Davy Crockett was to literally shoot, hiding behind a tight cover so he wouldn't see the flash. and run away quickly.

Davy Crockett's tenure was brief, like a series of comets blazing through the atmosphere. According to Foreign Policy, the military began withdrawing the weapon in the late 1960s because it was not accurate enough. The last Davy Crockett retired in 1971.

Retired Army Colonel David E. To understand why the military thought Davy Crockett was a good idea in the first place, you have to understand the era in which it was conceived, said Johnson, an expert in military history, strategy and doctrine. with Rand Corporation

Johnson told Task & Purpose that when President Dwight D. Eisenhower, in office from 1953 to 1961, looked for ways to reduce conventional military spending as part of an effort to manage the US economy. For Eisenhower, expanding the US nuclear arsenal was a much more cost-effective way to deter the Soviet Union.

"So the military is in a position where it has to communicate in order to survive," Johnson said. "And the connection is: How do you do on a nuclear battlefield? That's where the pantomic part comes in. These weapons began to be deployed because they seemed to work."
