Tomcat, Bobcat, Cougars, Cheetahs. The Beretta line of handguns has had an interesting line of cat guns over the years. A standout among gun enthusiasts is the Beretta 21A Bobcat, which was first introduced in late 1984. Chambered in .22LR, it is the unique definition of a pocket pistol, measuring just under 4 inches long and 1 inch wide. Not less than 4 inches in height and less than 12 ounces in weight.

Enough people thought the same about the Bobcat that Beretta finally noticed and came out with the new 21A Bobcat Covert, which is the same basic gun as before, but with a factory threaded barrel with standard 1/2×28 threads.
All dimensions of the gun are the same as before except for the barrel. Obviously, adding threads lengthens the barrel a bit (2.9 inches overall), but the gun overall still comes in just under 5.5 inches long. Basically, there are people carrying cell phones that are bigger (and for some, maybe heavier) than a 21A concealed handgun.

Retaining the same top-up barrel design as before, the 21A holds seven rounds in the secret magazine, with the eighth round loaded directly into the barrel. Dressed in a blue finish, the gun is attractively finished with a set of walnut grips engraved with the Beretta logo. There's also an all-FDE version with a Cerakote finish and polymer grips, but personally, the blue-walnut combo says "cover" better than the FDE. Your mileage may vary.
Of course, the whole point of taking the 21A's cover model is that you can suppress it and shoot, which is what I went to the range to do.
The rimfire suppressor I ran on it was a Banish 22 weighing only 4.1 ounces, so it didn't even notice the gun. The funniest thing to me is that even though my suppressor is short, coming in at only 5.42 inches long, it's actually 0.05 inches longer than the rifle, which is only 5.37 inches overall.
To say that this gun is a lot of fun to shoot would be an understatement. Shooting it down takes it to a whole new level of fun.

Because of the size of the gun, your little finger will hang off the bottom of the frame. There really is no way around it. However, the gun grips have a small bulge on each side, and you still feel like you have a great grip on concealment, even though your pinky doesn't have a home.
Designed as a SA/DA pistol, the single action trigger pull is around four to five pounds, while the double action trigger pull is around eight to nine pounds. It's not huge, but it's about what you'd expect from a stock SA/DA rifle. There is also a frame-mount safety that can be engaged with or without the hammer cock.
One thing to note, however, is that the slide does not lock back when the magazine is empty. It's not a big deal; Just be aware and know that it is considered a feature and not a drawback.

I can say a lot of good things about this gun, but I would be remiss if I didn't address the issues I had.
Views are first. To say they are small doesn't even begin to describe them. However, with a gun of this size, normal size sights are out of the question, although the sights will be clearer. If you are running a suppressor, the sights are worthless because they completely obscure their visual image. It's not a combo that lends itself to accurate shooting.
Next is the magazine release. Instead of being located directly behind the trigger guard as you find on most pistols, the 21A Covert's mag release is located near the bottom corner of the frame. Because of this location, it's not the easiest gun to put the mag in while holding a shooting grip, and because of this location, it's actually slightly recessed into the grip panel to prevent accidentally releasing the mag while holding the gun. It is a bit cumbersome and uncomfortable.
Finally, let's talk about the magazine. Nothing to criticize here except that I magazine is singular and magazine is plural. These days there is no reason for a gun company to ship pistols with less than two mags. Nothing puts a damper on your shooting like stopping and reloading a mag every seven rounds because you only have one. Additional mugs run about $20, assuming you can even find one in stock.

Ok, enough of my complaints, really there are very few complaints. The Beretta 21A Covert is a solid little pocket pistol. It's an absolute blast to shoot, and due to its small size and ability to suppress, it can be a great option for introducing kids and new shooters to the hobby. It's also a great option for any other type of shooter who wants to rock another cool gun at the range.
All in all: I dare you to run a mag through a Beretta 21 Bobcat covertly, suppressed or not, and not finish with a smile on your face.
